THE POSITION
The City Attorney’s Office of the City of Santa Barbara seeks an investigator to take a lead in conducting a variety of investigations assigned through their office. This is a critical position for the investigation of sensitive cases pertaining to civil and criminal matters, consumer fraud, human resources, civil litigation and related matters under the direction of the City Attorney’s Office. This position is responsible for the full scope of assigned investigations, including a variety of administrative duties in support of the investigative process. The investigator is expected to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with a variety of individuals contacted in the course of work, including a wide variety of citizens, agency representatives, and law enforcement agencies, coordinating multi-agency efforts and activities related to investigations. The ideal candidate will possess experience in interviewing potential witnesses, and subjects of investigations with professionalism, tact and thoroughness. Experience in municipal / government, social services, non-profit sector investigations is highly desired.
Duties and responsibilities include:
- Perform / conduct field investigations and surveillance, visit scenes of alleged injuries or crimes related to a wide variety of matters related to the City’s interests
- Conduct and coordinate witness interviews; serve subpoenas
- Gather and preserve data and evidence, analyze data gathered in the course investigations; photographing crime and accident scenes
- Evaluate physical, material, and environmental factors relevant to case investigations
- Transcribe witness interviews and other related administrative duties
- Prepare affidavits; summaries and reports of factual findings based on gathered evidence
- Testify in court; prepare hearing/trial materials including presentations materials, and visual displays, charts and diagrams of crime and accident scenes and events
- Perform related work as assigned; operate a motor vehicle as needed in performance of job duties
Two years of prior investigative experience or equivalent / similar experience. Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with course work in police science, criminology, public or business administration or a related field.
