Beginning January 1, 2026, fire services in California City will be handled by the Kern County Fire Department (KCFD).

Hemet Fire Chief Scott Brown has retired nearly six years to the day he took office. His last day was Friday, March 12.

Bret Black, who currently serves as a battalion chief for the Clovis Fire Department, was given the nod by the Piedmont City Council on September 17. He will take over at the start of next month.

Mike DuRee will step down on Oct. 5.
